Section 1 Housing allowance for Members of House of Representatives
Establishment of allowance— There is established in the House of Representatives an allowance which shall be available to pay a housing stipend of $2,500 to each eligible Member of the House of Representatives for each month in which the Member serves in the House.
Conditions— A Member is eligible to receive a stipend under this section if the Member submits to the Chief Administrative Officer of the House of Representatives an application which includes—
a statement that the Member will not use the Member’s office for personal overnight accommodations on an ongoing basis; and
such other information and assurances as the Chief Administrative Officer considers appropriate.
Use— A Member shall use a stipend received under this section to obtain housing in the Washington metropolitan area.
Regulations— This section shall be carried out in accordance with regulations promulgated by the Committee on House Administration.
Definitions— In this section—
the term Member of the House of Representatives includes a Delegate or Resident Commissioner to the Congress; and
the term Washington metropolitan area means the District of Columbia, the Counties of Montgomery and Prince Georges in Maryland, and the Counties of Arlington, Fairfax, Loudon, and Prince William and the Cities of Alexandria and Falls Church in Virginia.
