Term Extension for AmeriCorps Members Act

A BILL

To amend the National and Community Service Act of 1990 to clarify that an individual may receive certain benefits for more than 4 terms of service for compelling reasons.

Section 1 Short title

This Act may be cited as the “Term Extension for AmeriCorps Members Act”.

Sec. 2 Waivers

Section 139(b) of the National and Community Service Act of 1990 (42 U.S.C. 12593(b)) is amended by adding at the end the following:

“(5) Waivers for compelling purposes

“(A) Extension—A State Commission on National and Community Service for the State in which a national service program is being carried out may authorize, for compelling circumstances, an individual in an approved national service position may continue a service for more than 4 terms.

“(B) Benefits—An individual performing service under this paragraph may continue to receive a living allowance and other benefits under section 12594 of this title but may not receive an additional national service educational award under section 12595 of this title.”
