# §191. “Packer” defined


When used in this chapter the term “[packer](/usc/7/198.md?p=2)” means any [person](/usc/7/182.md?p=1) engaged in the business (a) of buying [livestock](/usc/7/182.md?p=4) in [commerce](/usc/7/182.md?p=11) for purposes of slaughter, or (b) of manufacturing or preparing meats or [meat food products](/usc/7/182.md?p=3) for sale or shipment in [commerce](/usc/7/182.md?p=11), or (c) of marketing meats, [meat food products](/usc/7/182.md?p=3), or [livestock products](/usc/7/182.md?p=5) in an unmanufactured form acting as a wholesale [broker](/usc/7/499a.md?p=b-7), [dealer](/usc/7/201.md?p=d), or distributor in [commerce](/usc/7/182.md?p=11).
