# §185. Federally funded research and development centers


The [Secretary](/usc/6/101.md?p=16), acting through the Under [Secretary](/usc/6/101.md?p=16) for Science and Technology, shall have the authority to establish or contract with 1 or more federally funded research and development [centers](/usc/6/681.md?p=1) to provide independent analysis of [homeland](/usc/6/101.md?p=1) security issues, or to carry out other responsibilities under this chapter, including coordinating and integrating both the extramural and intramural programs described in [section 188 of this title](/usc/6/188.md).
