# §9811. Travel and transportation expenses of certain new appointees

- (a) In this section, the term “new appointee” means—
  - (1) a [person](/usc/5/7103.md?p=a-1) newly appointed or reinstated to [Federal service](/usc/5/8521.md?p=a-1) to the [Administration](/usc/5/9801.md?p=1) to—
    - (A) a career or career-conditional appointment or an excepted [service](/usc/5/8401.md?p=26) appointment to a continuing [position](/usc/5/5102.md?p=a-3);
    - (B) a term appointment;
    - (C) an excepted [service](/usc/5/8401.md?p=26) appointment that provides for noncompetitive conversion to a career or career-conditional appointment;
    - (D) a career or limited term [Senior Executive](/usc/5/3132.md?p=a-3) [Service](/usc/5/8401.md?p=26) appointment;
    - (E) an appointment made under [section 20113(b)(1) of title 51](/usc/51/20113.md?p=b-1);
    - (F) an appointment to a [position](/usc/5/5102.md?p=a-3) established under [section 3104](/usc/5/3104.md); or
    - (G) an appointment to a [position](/usc/5/5102.md?p=a-3) established under [section 5108](/usc/5/5108.md); or
  - (2) a student trainee who, upon completion of academic work, is converted to an appointment in the [Administration](/usc/5/9801.md?p=1) that is identified in [paragraph (1)](#a-1) in accordance with an appropriate [authority](/usc/5/7103.md?p=a-6).
- (b) The [Administrator](/usc/5/9801.md?p=2) may [pay](/usc/5/7511.md?p=a-4) the travel, transportation, and relocation expenses of a new appointee to the same extent, in the same manner, and subject to the same conditions as the payment of such expenses under sections [5724](/usc/5/5724.md), [5724a](/usc/5/5724a.md), [5724b](/usc/5/5724b.md), and [5724c](/usc/5/5724c.md) to an [employee](/usc/5/4701.md?p=a-2) transferred in the interests of the [United States](/usc/5/7103.md?p=a-18) [Government](/usc/5/4101.md?p=3).
