# §10207. Promotions

- (a) **In General.—** Each [member](/usc/5/8401.md?p=20) who is promoted to a higher rank shall receive [basic pay](/usc/5/8401.md?p=4) at the same step at which such [member](/usc/5/8401.md?p=20) was being compensated prior to the date of the promotion.
- (b) **Credit for Service.—** For the purposes of a [service](/usc/5/8401.md?p=26) step adjustment under [section 10205](/usc/5/10205.md), periods of [service](/usc/5/8401.md?p=26) at the lower rank shall be credited in the same manner as if it was [service](/usc/5/8401.md?p=26) at the rank to which the [employee](/usc/5/4701.md?p=a-2) is promoted.
