# §1140. Information individuals 1 involved in accidents and families of such individuals


In the course of an investigation of an [accident](/usc/49/1101.md?p=a-1) described in [section 1131(a)(1)](/usc/49/1131.md?p=a-1), except an aircraft [accident](/usc/49/1101.md?p=a-1) described in [section 1136](/usc/49/1136.md) or a rail passenger [accident](/usc/49/1101.md?p=a-1) described in [section 1139](/usc/49/1139.md), the Board may, to the maximum extent practicable, ensure that individuals involved in [accidents](/usc/49/1101.md?p=a-1) and the families of such individuals, and other individuals the Board deems appropriate—

- (1) are informed as to the roles, with respect to the [accident](/usc/49/1101.md?p=a-1) and the post-[accident](/usc/49/1101.md?p=a-1) activities, of the Board;
- (2) are briefed, before any public briefing, about the [accident](/usc/49/1101.md?p=a-1), its causes, and any other findings from the investigation; and
- (3) are individually informed of and allowed to attend any public hearings and meetings of the Board about the [accident](/usc/49/1101.md?p=a-1).
