# §53908. Additional insurance privately obtained


With the approval of the [Secretary](/usc/46/53101.md?p=8) of Transportation, a [person](/usc/46/53101.md?p=6) having an insurable interest in a [vessel](/usc/46/53501.md?p=9) may obtain insurance on the [vessel](/usc/46/53501.md?p=9) with other underwriting agents in addition to the insurance with the [Secretary](/usc/46/53101.md?p=8). The [Secretary](/usc/46/53101.md?p=8) is not entitled to the benefit of the additional insurance.
