# §6835. Federal compliance

- (a) **Procedures—**
  - (1) The head of each [Federal agency](/usc/42/6802.md?p=3) shall adopt procedures necessary to assure that new [Federal buildings](/usc/42/6832.md?p=6) meet or exceed the [Federal building energy standards](/usc/42/6832.md?p=13) established under [section 6834 of this title](/usc/42/6834.md).
  - (2) The [Federal building energy standards](/usc/42/6832.md?p=13) established under [section 6834 of this title](/usc/42/6834.md) shall apply to new [buildings](/usc/42/6832.md?p=2) under the jurisdiction of the Architect of the Capitol. The Architect shall adopt procedures necessary to assure that such [buildings](/usc/42/6832.md?p=2) meet or exceed such standards.
- (b) **Construction of new buildings—** The head of a [Federal agency](/usc/42/6802.md?p=3) may expend Federal funds for the [construction](/usc/42/300s–3.md?p=7) of a new [Federal building](/usc/42/6832.md?p=6) only if the [building](/usc/42/6832.md?p=2) meets or exceeds the appropriate [Federal building energy standards](/usc/42/6832.md?p=13) established under [section 6834 of this title](/usc/42/6834.md).
