# §6704. Grants providing State or local contributions required under State or local law


In addition to the grants otherwise authorized by this chapter, the [Secretary](/usc/42/6701.md?p=1) is authorized to make a grant for the purpose of providing all or any portion of the required [State](/usc/42/6701.md?p=2) or local share of the cost of any [public works project](/usc/42/6701.md?p=4) for which financial assistance is authorized under any provision of [State](/usc/42/6701.md?p=2) or local law requiring such contribution. Any grant made for a [public works project](/usc/42/6701.md?p=4) under this section shall be made in such amount as may be necessary to provide the requested [State](/usc/42/6701.md?p=2) or local share of the cost of such [project](/usc/42/13641.md?p=2). A grant shall be made under this section for either the [State](/usc/42/6701.md?p=2) or local share of the cost of the [project](/usc/42/13641.md?p=2), but not both shares. No grant shall be made for a [project](/usc/42/13641.md?p=2) under this section unless the share of the financial assistance for such [project](/usc/42/13641.md?p=2) (other than the share with respect to which a grant is requested under this section) is immediately available for such [project](/usc/42/13641.md?p=2) and [construction](/usc/42/300s–3.md?p=7) of such [project](/usc/42/13641.md?p=2) has not yet been initiated.
