# §3032b. Older individuals’ protection from violence projects

- (a) **Program authorized—** The [Assistant Secretary](/usc/42/3002.md?p=7) shall make grants to [States](/usc/42/3002.md?p=51), area [agencies](/usc/42/8262.md?p=1) on aging, [nonprofit](/usc/42/3002.md?p=39) organizations, or [tribal organizations](/usc/42/3002.md?p=56) to carry out the activities described in [subsection (b)](#b).
- (b) **Activities—** A [State](/usc/42/3002.md?p=51), an [area agency on aging](/usc/42/3002.md?p=6), a [nonprofit](/usc/42/3002.md?p=39) organization, or a [tribal organization](/usc/42/3002.md?p=56) that receives a grant under [subsection (a)](#a) shall use such grant to—
  - (1) support [projects](/usc/42/13641.md?p=2) in local communities, involving diverse sectors of each community, to coordinate activities concerning intervention in and prevention of [elder abuse, neglect, and exploitation](/usc/42/3002.md?p=16), including [family violence](/usc/42/3002.md?p=19) and [sexual assault](/usc/42/3002.md?p=50), against [older individuals](/usc/42/3002.md?p=40);
  - (2) develop and implement outreach [programs](/usc/42/3056p.md?p=a-7) directed toward assisting [older individuals](/usc/42/3002.md?p=40) who are victims of [elder abuse, neglect, and exploitation](/usc/42/3002.md?p=16) (including [family violence](/usc/42/3002.md?p=19) and [sexual assault](/usc/42/3002.md?p=50), against [older individuals](/usc/42/3002.md?p=40)), including [programs](/usc/42/3056p.md?p=a-7) directed toward assisting the individuals in senior housing complexes, nursing homes, [board and care facilities](/usc/42/3002.md?p=10), and senior centers;
  - (3) expand access to [family violence](/usc/42/3002.md?p=19) and [sexual assault](/usc/42/3002.md?p=50) [programs](/usc/42/3056p.md?p=a-7) (including shelters, rape crisis centers, and support groups), including mental health services, safety planning and legal advocacy for [older individuals](/usc/42/3002.md?p=40) and encourage the use of senior housing, hotels, or other suitable facilities or services when appropriate as emergency short-term shelters for [older individuals](/usc/42/3002.md?p=40) who are the victims of [elder abuse](/usc/42/3002.md?p=15), including [family violence](/usc/42/3002.md?p=19) and [sexual assault](/usc/42/3002.md?p=50); or
  - (4) promote research on legal, organizational, or training impediments to providing services to [older individuals](/usc/42/3002.md?p=40) through shelters and other [programs](/usc/42/3056p.md?p=a-7), such as impediments to provision of services in coordination with delivery of health care or services delivered under this chapter.
- (c) **Preference—** In awarding grants under [subsection (a)](#a), the [Assistant Secretary](/usc/42/3002.md?p=7) shall give preference to a [State](/usc/42/3002.md?p=51), an [area agency on aging](/usc/42/3002.md?p=6), a [nonprofit](/usc/42/3002.md?p=39) organization, or a [tribal organization](/usc/42/3002.md?p=56) that has the ability to carry out the activities described in this section and subchapter XI of this chapter.
- (d) **Coordination—** The [Assistant Secretary](/usc/42/3002.md?p=7) shall encourage each [State](/usc/42/3002.md?p=51), [area agency on aging](/usc/42/3002.md?p=6), [nonprofit](/usc/42/3002.md?p=39) organization, and [tribal organization](/usc/42/3002.md?p=56) that receives a grant under [subsection (a)](#a) to coordinate activities provided under this section with activities provided by other area [agencies](/usc/42/8262.md?p=1) on aging, [tribal organizations](/usc/42/3002.md?p=56), [State](/usc/42/3002.md?p=51) adult protective service [programs](/usc/42/3056p.md?p=a-7), private [nonprofit](/usc/42/3002.md?p=39) organizations, and by other entities receiving funds under subchapter XI of this chapter.
