# §300d–3. Grants to improve trauma care in rural areas

- (a) **In general—** The [Secretary](/usc/42/201.md?p=c) shall award grants to eligible entities for the purpose of carrying out research and demonstration [projects](/usc/42/13641.md?p=2) to support the improvement of emergency medical [services](/usc/42/201.md?p=a) and [trauma](/usc/42/300d–31.md?p=4) care in rural areas through the development of innovative uses of technology, training and education, transportation of seriously injured patients for the purposes of receiving such emergency medical [services](/usc/42/201.md?p=a), access to prehospital care, evaluation of protocols for the purposes of improvement of outcomes and dissemination of any related best [practices](/usc/42/17061.md?p=19), activities to facilitate [clinical research](/usc/42/284d.md?p=b), as applicable and appropriate, and increasing communication and coordination with applicable [State](/usc/42/201.md?p=f) or Tribal [trauma](/usc/42/300d–31.md?p=4) systems.
- (b) **Eligible entities—**
  - (1) **In general—** To be eligible to receive a grant under this section, an entity shall be a public or private entity that provides [trauma](/usc/42/300d–31.md?p=4) care in a rural area.
  - (2) **Priority—** In awarding grants under this section, the [Secretary](/usc/42/201.md?p=c) shall give priority to eligible entities that will provide [services](/usc/42/201.md?p=a) under the grant in any rural area identified by a [State](/usc/42/201.md?p=f) under [section 300d–14(d)(1) of this title](/usc/42/300d–14.md?p=d-1).
- (c) **Requirement of application—** The [Secretary](/usc/42/201.md?p=c) may not make a grant under [subsection (a)](#a) unless an application for the grant is submitted to the [Secretary](/usc/42/201.md?p=c) and the application is in such form, is made in such manner, and contains such agreements, assurances, and information as the [Secretary](/usc/42/201.md?p=c) determines to be necessary to carry out this section.
- (d) **Reports—** An entity that receives a grant under this section shall submit to the [Secretary](/usc/42/201.md?p=c) such reports as the [Secretary](/usc/42/201.md?p=c) may require to inform administration of the [program](/usc/42/274l–1.md?p=4) under this section.

### Amendments

2022—Pub. L. 117–328, § 2113(b)(1), amended section catchline generally. Prior to amendment, section catchline read as follows: “Establishment of programs for improving trauma care in rural areas”.

Subsecs. (a), (b). Pub. L. 117–328, § 2113(b)(2), amended subsecs. (a) and (b) generally. Prior to amendment, subsecs. (a) and (b) related to authority to make grants to public and nonprofit private entities to carry out research and demonstration projects with respect to improving the availability and quality of emergency medical services in rural areas and special consideration for certain rural areas, respectively.

Subsec. (d). Pub. L. 117–328, § 2113(b)(3), added subsec. (d).

2007—Pub. L. 110–23, § 4, amended section generally. Prior to amendment, section provided for establishment of programs for improving trauma care in rural areas.
