# §18812. Leveraging existing agency programs to assist small and medium manufacturers


The [Secretary](/usc/42/18701.md?p=3) shall expand the scope of technologies covered by the [industrial research and assessment centers](/usc/42/18811.md?p=2) of the [Department](/usc/42/18701.md?p=1)—

- (1) to include [smart manufacturing](/usc/42/18811.md?p=7) technologies and [practices](/usc/42/17061.md?p=19); and
- (2) to equip the [directors](/usc/42/11851.md?p=5) of the [industrial research and assessment centers](/usc/42/18811.md?p=2) with the training and tools necessary to provide technical assistance in [smart manufacturing](/usc/42/18811.md?p=7) technologies and [practices](/usc/42/17061.md?p=19), including [energy management systems](/usc/42/18811.md?p=1), to manufacturers.
