# §12133. “Indian tribe” defined


In this part, “[Indian tribe](/usc/34/11103.md?p=18)” means a tribe, band, pueblo, nation, or other organized group or community of [Indians](/usc/34/12291.md?p=a-18), including an [Alaska Native village](/usc/34/12291.md?p=a-2) (as defined in or established under the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act ([43 U.S.C. 1601](/usc/43/1601.md) et seq.),[^1] that is recognized as eligible for the special programs and [services](/usc/34/12291.md?p=a-51) provided by the United States to [Indians](/usc/34/12291.md?p=a-18) because of their status as [Indians](/usc/34/12291.md?p=a-18).
