# §301. Federal recognition of enlisted members


To be eligible for Federal recognition as an [enlisted member](/usc/32/101.md?p=9) of the [National Guard](/usc/32/101.md?p=3), a person must have the qualifications prescribed by the Secretary concerned for the [grade](/usc/32/101.md?p=10), branch, position, and type of unit or organization involved. He becomes federally recognized upon enlisting in a federally recognized unit or organization of the [National Guard](/usc/32/101.md?p=3).
