# §9512. Functions


From funds appropriated under [section 9584 of this title](/usc/20/9584.md), the [Institute](/usc/20/9501.md?p=14), directly or through grants, contracts, or cooperative agreements, shall—

- (1) conduct and support [scientifically valid research](/usc/20/9501.md?p=20) activities, including [basic research](/usc/20/9501.md?p=3) and [applied research](/usc/20/9501.md?p=2), statistics activities, [scientifically valid education evaluation](/usc/20/9501.md?p=19), [development](/usc/20/9501.md?p=8), and wide [dissemination](/usc/20/9501.md?p=10);
- (2) widely disseminate the findings and results of [scientifically valid research](/usc/20/9501.md?p=20) in education;
- (3) promote the use, [development](/usc/20/9501.md?p=8), and application of knowledge gained from [scientifically valid research](/usc/20/9501.md?p=20) activities;
- (4) strengthen the national capacity to conduct, develop, and widely disseminate [scientifically valid research](/usc/20/9501.md?p=20) in education;
- (5) promote the coordination, [development](/usc/20/9501.md?p=8), and [dissemination](/usc/20/9501.md?p=10) of [scientifically valid research](/usc/20/9501.md?p=20) in education within the [Department](/usc/20/9501.md?p=7) and the Federal Government; and
- (6) promote the use and application of research and [development](/usc/20/9501.md?p=8) to improve practice in the classroom.
