# §2272. Destruction of vessel by owner


[Whoever](/usc/18/921.md?p=a-1), upon the high seas or on any other waters within the admiralty and maritime jurisdiction of the [United States](/usc/18/229F.md?p=9), willfully and [corruptly](/usc/18/1515.md?p=b) casts away or otherwise destroys any vessel of which he is [owner](/usc/18/1839.md?p=4), in whole or in part, with intent to injure any [person](/usc/18/229F.md?p=5) that may underwrite any policy of insurance thereon, or any merchant that may have goods thereon, or any other [owner](/usc/18/1839.md?p=4) of such vessel, shall be imprisoned for life or for any term of years.
