Deserters, prisoners, members absent without leave: expenses and rewards Funds appropriated to the [Department](/usc/10/101.md?p=a-6) of Defense may be used for the following purposes: - (1) Expenses for the apprehension and delivery of deserters, prisoners, and members absent without leave, including the payment of rewards, in an amount not to exceed $75, for the apprehension of any such [person](/usc/10/2700.md?p=2). - (2) Expenses of prisoners confined in nonmilitary [facilities](/usc/10/2700.md?p=2). - (3) Payment of a gratuity of not to exceed $25 to each prisoner upon [release](/usc/10/2700.md?p=2) from confinement in a [military](/usc/10/801.md?p=8) or contract prison [facility](/usc/10/2700.md?p=2). - (4) The issue of authorized articles to prisoners and other [persons](/usc/10/2700.md?p=2) in [military](/usc/10/801.md?p=8) custody. - (5) Under such regulations as the [Secretary concerned](/usc/10/2801.md?p=c-5) may prescribe, expenses incident to the maintenance, [pay](/usc/10/101.md?p=a-15), and allowances of prisoners of war, other [persons](/usc/10/2700.md?p=2) in the custody of the Army, Navy, or Air Force whose status is determined by the [Secretary concerned](/usc/10/2801.md?p=c-5) to be similar to prisoners of war, and [persons](/usc/10/2700.md?p=2) detained in the custody of the Army, Navy, or Air Force pursuant to Presidential proclamation. ## Source credit (Added Pub.
