# §646. Consideration of performance as a member of the Joint Staff


The [Secretary](/usc/10/4951.md?p=3) of Defense, in consultation with the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, shall ensure that [officer](/usc/10/101.md?p=b-1) personnel policies of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, and Space Force concerning promotion, retention, and assignment give appropriate consideration to the performance of an [officer](/usc/10/101.md?p=b-1) as a member of the Joint Staff.
