# §6176. Defense environmental cleanup technology program

- (a) **Establishment of Program.—** The [Secretary](/usc/10/4951.md?p=3) of Energy shall establish and carry out a [program](/usc/10/2101.md?p=1) of research for the development of technologies useful for—
  - (1) the reduction of environmental hazards and contamination resulting from defense waste; and
  - (2) environmental restoration of inactive defense waste [disposal](/usc/10/2700.md?p=2) sites.
- (b) **Definitions.—** As used in this section:
  - (1) The term “defense waste” means waste, including radioactive waste, resulting primarily from atomic energy defense activities of the [Department](/usc/10/101.md?p=a-6) of Energy.
  - (2) The term “inactive defense waste [disposal](/usc/10/2700.md?p=2) site” means any site (including any [facility](/usc/10/2700.md?p=2)) under the control or jurisdiction of the [Secretary](/usc/10/4951.md?p=3) of Energy which is used for the [disposal](/usc/10/2700.md?p=2) of defense waste and is closed to the [disposal](/usc/10/2700.md?p=2) of additional defense waste, including any site that is subject to decontamination and decommissioning.
