# §5532. Hypersonic defense capability development

- (a) **Executive Agent.—** The Director of the Missile [Defense Agency](/usc/10/101.md?p=a-11) shall serve as the executive agent for the [Department](/usc/10/101.md?p=a-6) of Defense for the development of a capability by the [United States](/usc/10/101.md?p=a-1) to counter hypersonic boost-glide vehicle capabilities and conventional prompt strike capabilities that may be employed against the [United States](/usc/10/101.md?p=a-1), the allies of the [United States](/usc/10/101.md?p=a-1), and the deployed forces of the [United States](/usc/10/101.md?p=a-1).
- (b) **Duties.—** In carrying out [subsection (a)](#a), the Director shall—
  - (1) develop architectures for a hypersonic defense capability, from detecting threats to intercepting such threats, that—
    - (A) involves systems of the [military departments](/usc/10/101.md?p=a-8) and the [Defense Agencies](/usc/10/101.md?p=a-11); and
    - (B) [includes](/usc/10/101.md?p=g-4) both kinetic and nonkinetic options for such interception; and
  - (2) not later than September 30, 2017, establish a [program](/usc/10/2101.md?p=1) of [record](/usc/10/801.md?p=14) to develop a hypersonic defense capability.
