# §2204. Obligation of appropriations

To prevent overdrafts and deficiencies in the fiscal year for which appropriations are made, appropriations made to the [Department](/usc/10/101.md?p=a-6) of Defense or to a [military](/usc/10/801.md?p=8) [department](/usc/10/101.md?p=a-6), and reimbursements thereto, are available for obligation and expenditure only under scheduled [rates](/usc/10/101.md?p=b-9) of obligation, or changes thereto, that have been approved by the [Secretary](/usc/10/4951.md?p=3) of Defense. This section does not prohibit the [Department](/usc/10/101.md?p=a-6) of Defense from incurring a deficiency that it has been authorized by law to incur.
