# §20602. Officers: computation of years of service for voluntary retirement

- (a) **Years of Active Service.—** For the purpose of determining whether an [officer](/usc/10/101.md?p=b-1) of the Space Force may be retired under [section 20601 of this title](/usc/10/20601.md), the [officer](/usc/10/101.md?p=b-1)’s years of service are computed by adding all [active service](/usc/10/101.md?p=d-3) in the [armed forces](/usc/10/101.md?p=a-4).
- (b) **Reference to Section Excluding Service During Certain Periods.—** [Section 972(b) of this title](/usc/10/972.md?p=b) excludes from computation of an [officer](/usc/10/101.md?p=b-1)’s years of service for purposes of this section any time identified with respect to that [officer](/usc/10/101.md?p=b-1) under that section.
