# §2003. Aeronautical rating as pilot: qualifications


To be eligible to receive an aeronautical [rating](/usc/10/101.md?p=b-9) as a pilot in the Army or Air Force or be designated as a naval aviator, a member of an armed force must successfully complete an undergraduate pilot course of instruction prescribed or approved by the [Secretary](/usc/10/4951.md?p=3) of his [military](/usc/10/801.md?p=8) [department](/usc/10/101.md?p=a-6).
