# §12309. Reserve officers: use of in expansion of armed forces


When an expansion of the active [armed forces](/usc/10/101.md?p=a-4) requires that [officers](/usc/10/101.md?p=b-1) of the [reserve](/usc/10/101.md?p=c-6) components who are not members of units organized to serve as such be ordered as individuals to [active duty](/usc/10/101.md?p=d-1) (other than for training) without their consent, the services of qualified and available [reserve](/usc/10/101.md?p=c-6) [officers](/usc/10/101.md?p=b-1) in all [grades](/usc/10/101.md?p=b-7) shall be used, so far as practicable, according to the needs of the branches, [grades](/usc/10/101.md?p=b-7), or specialties concerned.
