# §12009. Army and Air Force reserve components: temporary increases

- (a) The [authorized strength](/usc/10/101.md?p=b-11) in any [reserve](/usc/10/101.md?p=c-6) [grade](/usc/10/101.md?p=b-7), as prescribed under this chapter, for any [reserve](/usc/10/101.md?p=c-6) component under the jurisdiction of the [Secretary](/usc/10/12521.md?p=4) of the Army or the [Secretary](/usc/10/12521.md?p=4) of the Air Force is automatically increased to the minimum extent necessary to give effect to each appointment made in that [grade](/usc/10/101.md?p=b-7) under section [1211(a)](/usc/10/1211.md?p=a), [7036](/usc/10/7036.md), [14304(b)](/usc/10/14304.md?p=b), [14314](/usc/10/14314.md), or [14317](/usc/10/14317.md) of this title.
- (b) An [authorized strength](/usc/10/101.md?p=b-11) so increased is increased for no other purpose. While an [officer](/usc/10/101.md?p=b-1) holds that [grade](/usc/10/101.md?p=b-7), the [officer](/usc/10/101.md?p=b-1) whose appointment caused the increase is counted for the purpose of determining when other appointments, not under those sections, may be made in that [grade](/usc/10/101.md?p=b-7).
