# §1056a. Reintegration of recovered Department of Defense personnel; post-isolation support activities for other recovered personnel

- (a) **Reintegration and Support Authorized.—** The [Secretary](/usc/10/4951.md?p=3) of Defense may carry out the following:
  - (1) Reintegration activities for recovered [persons](/usc/10/2700.md?p=2) who are [Department](/usc/10/101.md?p=a-6) of Defense personnel.
  - (2) Post-isolation support activities for or on behalf of other recovered [persons](/usc/10/2700.md?p=2) who are [officers](/usc/10/101.md?p=b-1) or employees of the [United States](/usc/10/101.md?p=a-1) Government, [military](/usc/10/801.md?p=8) or civilian [officers](/usc/10/101.md?p=b-1) or employees of an allied or [coalition partner](/usc/10/948a.md?p=3) of the [United States](/usc/10/101.md?p=a-1), or other [United States](/usc/10/101.md?p=a-1) or foreign nationals.
- (b) **Activities Authorized.—**
  - (1) The activities authorized by [subsection (a)](#a) for or on behalf of a recovered [person](/usc/10/2700.md?p=2) may include the following:
    - (A) The provision of food, clothing, necessary medical support, and essential sundry items for the recovered [person](/usc/10/2700.md?p=2).
    - (B) In accordance with regulations prescribed by the [Secretary](/usc/10/4951.md?p=3) of Defense, travel and transportation allowances for not more than three family members, or other designated individuals, determined by the commander or head of a [military](/usc/10/801.md?p=8) medical treatment [facility](/usc/10/2700.md?p=2) to be beneficial for the reintegration of the recovered [person](/usc/10/2700.md?p=2) and whose presence may contribute to improving the physical and mental health of the recovered [person](/usc/10/2700.md?p=2).
    - (C) Transportation or reimbursement for transportation in connection with the attendance of the recovered [person](/usc/10/2700.md?p=2) at events or [functions](/usc/10/467.md?p=1) determined by the commander or head of a [military](/usc/10/801.md?p=8) medical treatment [facility](/usc/10/2700.md?p=2) to contribute to the physical and mental health of the recovered [person](/usc/10/2700.md?p=2).
  - (2) Medical support may be provided under [paragraph (1)(A)](#b-1-A) to a recovered [person](/usc/10/2700.md?p=2) who is not a member of the [armed forces](/usc/10/101.md?p=a-4) for not more than 20 days.
- (c) **Definitions.—** In this section:
  - (1) The term “post-isolation support”, in the case of a recovered [person](/usc/10/2700.md?p=2), means—
    - (A) the debriefing of the recovered [person](/usc/10/2700.md?p=2) following a separation as described in [paragraph (2)](#c-2);
    - (B) activities to promote or support the physical and mental health of the recovered [person](/usc/10/2700.md?p=2) following such a separation; and
    - (C) other activities to facilitate return of the recovered [person](/usc/10/2700.md?p=2) to [military](/usc/10/801.md?p=8) or civilian life as expeditiously as possible following such a separation.
  - (2) The term “recovered [person](/usc/10/2700.md?p=2)” means an individual who is returned alive from separation (whether as an individual or a group) while participating in or in association with a [United States](/usc/10/101.md?p=a-1)-sponsored [military](/usc/10/801.md?p=8) activity or mission in which the individual was detained in isolation or held in captivity by a hostile entity.
  - (3) The term “reintegration”, in the case of a recovered [person](/usc/10/2700.md?p=2), means—
    - (A) the debriefing of the recovered [person](/usc/10/2700.md?p=2) following a separation as described in [paragraph (2)](#c-2);
    - (B) activities to promote or support for the physical and mental health of the recovered [person](/usc/10/2700.md?p=2) following such a separation; and
    - (C) other activities to facilitate return of the recovered [person](/usc/10/2700.md?p=2) to [military](/usc/10/801.md?p=8) duty or employment with the [Department](/usc/10/101.md?p=a-6) of Defense as expeditiously as possible following such a separation.
