# §10143. Ready Reserve: Selected Reserve

- (a) Within the Ready [Reserve](/usc/10/101.md?p=c-6) of each of the [reserve](/usc/10/101.md?p=c-6) components there is a Selected [Reserve](/usc/10/101.md?p=c-6). The Selected [Reserve](/usc/10/101.md?p=c-6) consists of units, and, as designated by the [Secretary concerned](/usc/10/101.md?p=a-9), of [Reserves](/usc/10/101.md?p=c-6), trained as prescribed in [section 10147(a)(1) of this title](/usc/10/10147.md?p=a-1) or [section 502(a) of title 32](/usc/32/502.md?p=a), as appropriate.
- (b) The organization and unit structure of the Selected [Reserve](/usc/10/101.md?p=c-6) shall be approved—
  - (1) in the case of all [reserve](/usc/10/101.md?p=c-6) components other than the Coast Guard [Reserve](/usc/10/101.md?p=c-6), by the [Secretary](/usc/10/12521.md?p=4) of Defense based upon recommendations from the [military departments](/usc/10/101.md?p=a-8) as approved by the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff in accordance with contingency and war plans; and
  - (2) in the case of the Coast Guard [Reserve](/usc/10/101.md?p=c-6), by the [Secretary](/usc/10/12521.md?p=4) of Homeland Security upon the recommendation of the Commandant of the Coast Guard.
