# §10102. Purpose of reserve components


The purpose of each [reserve](/usc/10/101.md?p=c-6) component is to provide trained units and qualified persons available for [active duty](/usc/10/101.md?p=d-1) in the [armed forces](/usc/10/101.md?p=a-4), in time of war or national emergency, and at such other times as the national security may require, to fill the needs of the [armed forces](/usc/10/101.md?p=a-4) whenever more units and persons are needed than are in the [regular](/usc/10/101.md?p=b-12) components.
