# §510.1. Scope and purpose.


This rule governs the use of the information gathering powers of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration contained in [section 112](/cfr/49/112.md) of the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act of 1966, as amended [15 U.S.C. 1401](/usc/15/1401.md), and sections [104](/cfr/49/104.md), [204](/cfr/49/204.md), [414](/cfr/49/414.md), and [505](/cfr/49/505.md) of the Motor Vehicle Information and Cost Savings Act, as amended 15 U.S.C. [1914](/usc/15/1914.md), [1944](/usc/15/1944.md), [1990d](/usc/15/1990d.md), and [2005](/usc/15/2005.md).
