# §1171.1. About the National Endowment for the Humanities.


The National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) was established by the National Foundation on the Arts and Humanities Act of 1965, [20 U.S.C. 951](/usc/20/951.md) et seq., and is an independent grant-making agency of the United States government dedicated to supporting research, education, preservation, and public programs in the humanities. The NEH is directed by a Chairman and has an advisory council composed of twenty-six presidentially-appointed and Senate-confirmed members.
