# §60.693-1. Alternative standards for individual drain systems.

- (a) An owner or operator may elect to construct and operate a completely closed drain system.
- (b) Each completely closed drain system shall be equipped and operated with a closed vent system and control device complying with the requirements of [§ 60.692-5](/cfr/40/60.692-5.md).
- (c) An owner or operator must notify the Administrator in the report required in [40 CFR 60.7](/cfr/40/60.7.md) that the owner or operator has elected to construct and operate a completely closed drain system.
- (d) If an owner or operator elects to comply with the provisions of this section, then the owner or operator does not need to comply with the provisions of [§ 60.692-2](/cfr/40/60.692-2.md) or [§ 60.694](/cfr/40/60.694.md).
- (e)
  - (1) Sewer lines shall not be open to the atmosphere and shall be covered or enclosed in a manner so as to have no visual gaps or cracks in joints, seals, or other emission interfaces.
  - (2) The portion of each unburied sewer line shall be visually inspected initially and semiannually thereafter for indication of cracks, gaps, or other problems that could result in VOC emissions.
  - (3) Whenever cracks, gaps, or other problems are detected, repairs shall be made as soon as practicable, but not later than 15 calendar days after identification, except as provided in [§ 60.692-6](/cfr/40/60.692-6.md).
