# §149.406. What are the approval requirements for a fire extinguisher?


All portable and semi-portable fire extinguishers must be of an approved type under [46 CFR part 162](/cfr/46/part162.md), subparts [162.028](/cfr/33/subpart162.028.md) and [162.039](/cfr/33/subpart162.039.md), respectively.
