# §142.45. Personal flotation devices.


Personnel, when working in a location such that, in the event of a fall, they would likely fall into water, shall wear a work vest that meets the requirements of [33 CFR 146.20](/cfr/33/146.20.md) or a life preserver that meets the requirements of 46 CFR [160.002](/cfr/46/160.002.md), [160.005](/cfr/46/160.005.md), or [160.055](/cfr/46/160.055.md), except when using the safety belts and lifelines required by [§ 142.42](/cfr/33/142.42.md).
