# §81.49. What is the purpose of this subpart?


This subpart establishes requirements for formulating and submitting petitions to request the Secretary to call a Secretarial election as required by the governing documents or charters of incorporation of tribes issued under the Indian Reorganization Act (IRA), 25 U.S.C. [476](/usc/25/476.md) and [477](/usc/25/477.md), as amended, and the Oklahoma Indian Welfare Act (OIWA), [25 U.S.C. 503](/usc/25/503.md). This Subpart may also be used by a federally recognized tribe that is adopting a governing document, under Federal statute, for the first time.
