# §398.1. Purpose.


The purpose of this part is to establish general guidelines for the determination of basic essential air service for each eligible place under 49 U.S.C. [41731](/usc/49/41731.md) and [41732](/usc/49/41732.md). Procedures for the determination of the essential air service level for a place are contained in [part 325](/cfr/14/part325.md) of this chapter.
