# §820.80. Basis and purpose.


This subpart implements the Federal Civil Penalties Inflation Adjustment Act of 1990 (the Act) (Pub. L. 101-410), as amended by the Debt Collection Improvement Act of 1996 (Pub. L. 104-134, [section 31001](/cfr/10/31001.md)) and the Federal Civil Penalties Inflation Adjustment Act Improvements Act of 2015 (Pub. L. 114-74, [section 701](/cfr/10/701.md)). [28 U.S.C. 2461](/usc/28/2461.md) note. As amended, the Act requires each agency head to adjust by regulation each civil monetary penalty provided by law within the jurisdiction of the Federal agency by the inflation adjustment specified in [28 U.S.C. 2461](/usc/28/2461.md) note. This subpart increases the civil penalty amount specified in [42 U.S.C. 2282a](/usc/42/2282a.md).
