# §1042.100. Purpose and effective date.


The purpose of these Title IX regulations is to effectuate Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, as amended (except sections [904](/cfr/10/904.md) and [906](/cfr/10/906.md) of those Amendments) (20 U.S.C. [1681](/usc/20/1681.md), [1682](/usc/20/1682.md), [1683](/usc/20/1683.md), [1685](/usc/20/1685.md), [1686](/usc/20/1686.md), [1687](/usc/20/1687.md), [1688](/usc/20/1688.md)), which is designed to eliminate (with certain exceptions) discrimination on the basis of sex in any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance, whether or not such program or activity is offered or sponsored by an educational institution as defined in these Title IX regulations. The effective date of these Title IX regulations is February 20, 2001.
